Cyclone Evan has caused widespread damage in Samoa, and is due to hit Fiji on Dec. 17
LONDON (AlertNet) – A small but powerful storm hit Samoa on Dec. 13, causing flash floods and widespread damage in the capital Apia, according to Stuff.co.nz. The main airport has been affected, and the city evacuated.
Electricity and phone lines are down across much of the country, although mobile phone networks are still working.
Cyclone Evan is expected to intensify from a Category 2 to a Category 3 storm on Dec. 14, while still within range of Samoa.
It is forecast to strike Fiji at about 06:00 GMT on Dec. 17, with wind speeds of about 166 km per hour (103 mph), Tropical Storm Risk said.
The northern islands of Tonga are expected to feel the impact of the storm as it moves towards Fiji, Stuff.co.nz reported.
