Delhi high court presses for more public toilets for women – which number only 269, compared to 3,712 for men - report

NEW DELHI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The Delhi high court has called on local authorities in the Indian capital to provide more public toilets for women after it heard that there were more than 13 times more toilets for men in the city, the Times of India reported on Thursday.

According to the report, there are 3,712 public toilets for men, compared to 269 for women in 10 out of 12 zones of city.

Activists say the lack of toilets for women is a serious problem, not just in cities but also in rural areas. Women are often forced to defecate in the open, leaving many vulnerable to rape and other forms of violence.
