AID workers for Plan International are on high alert after heavy monsoon rains swept across Pakistan.

Further deluges are forecast over the next two days in Balochistan and Sindh, among other regions.

Downpours at the weekend left at least 80 dead with many more injured in areas hit hard by flooding in recent years.

“Our partners on the ground are coordinating with the district government and rescue services,” says Plan’s country director in Pakistan Rashid Javed.

“They’ve already taken part in the evacuation - handing over boats to the rescue services for evacuating those affected.”

Children are among the dead in the worst affected villages after heavy rain triggered hill torrents.

With further poor weather likely, traditionally flash flood-prone areas, including Marden, Malakand and Hazara are being closely monitored.

Plan has been working in Pakistan since 1997, helping marginalised children to access their rights to health, education, livelihood and protection.

The charity also intervened during the devastating floods of 2010 that affected millions of villagers across the country.

“We’re closely monitoring the situation on the ground,” says Mr Javed. “We have staff trained in disaster response that can be mobilised to respond to current and emerging needs.”
