"The rains and flooding have destroyed the homes and belongings of thousands of families," said Jean-Christophe Sandoz, head of the ICRC's delegation in Sudan. "This aid will help people cope with the emergency by covering their most urgent needs. Red Crescent staff and volunteers reached the scene very quickly and have worked tirelessly to help the families in need."Each family received a kit consisting of tarpaulins for temporary shelter, together with plastic mats, blankets, mosquito nets, buckets, jerrycans, cooking utensils, soap and clothes. Assessments are ongoing to determine water and sanitation needs in the affected areas. The ICRC provided vehicles for the delivery of this aid, and will continue to support the Sudanese Red Crescent in helping the flood-affected communities.
The ICRC has been working in Sudan since 1978. In 2003, it extended its operations to Darfur, where it helps people affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence.
