Bamako residents living near the city's river on Thursday (August 29) attempted to rescue what they could after flash floods killed at least 24 and devastated nearby neighborhoods, claiming people's belongings, vehicles and livelihoods.
Mali's riverside capital was struck on Wednesday (August 28) when torrential rains provoked a deluge of flood water that washed away homes in several neighborhoods, affecting thousands.
Bankoni, Taliko, Lafiabougou, Djicoroni Woyowayanko, Lafiabougou Bougouba and Bougoudani neighborhoods were all hit by floods during rain storms that lasted most of the day.
Nineteen people were reported to have died in Taliko alone.
Some locals attempted to rescue vehicles stuck underneath fast flowing flood water in the river, but appeared to have no luck with one vehicle seemingly immovable beneath the strong currents.
Others watched, while a van was later successfully turned back upright, though severely damaged by flood waters.
Parts of Bamako, a city of around 2 million people on the Niger River, flood regularly during the West African nation's June-to-October rainy season.
Deaths are a relatively common occurrence.
Some of the worst damage during Wednesday's flooding occurred in areas where houses had been built on land reserved for drainage, according to a Reuters witness.
