KABUL, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Insurgents including a suicide car bomber attacked the U.S. consulate in the western Afghanistan city of Herat on Friday, police said, and a gun battle was under way.

It was unclear whether insurgents had made it inside the consulate building in relatively peaceful Herat, the main city in Afghanistan's west near the Iranian border. Some media reported up to seven people had been wounded.

"There was a suicide car bomb ... then gun shots inside the consulate compound," a police official in Herat told Reuters. (Reporting by Dylan Welch and Mirwais Harooni; Editing by Paul Tait and Michael Perry)
