Hundreds die in Pakistan quake

by Reuters

More than 200 people have been killed in a powerful earthquake in Pakistan.

These were the scenes of devastation after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Baluchistan province in Pakistan on Tuesday.

By 1100GMT on Wednesday authorities said at least 208 people had been killed.

The quake reduced hundreds of mud houses to rubble.

Communications to the worst-affected areas were wiped out.

The quake was felt across South Asia.

Pakistani broadcaster Geo tv said it was so powerful it caused a small island to emerge just off the coastline near the epicentre.

It aired still pictures and video of people on a beach looking out to the land mass in the Arabian Sea.
