KAMPALA, Dec 19 (Reuters) - The United Nations has requested that Uganda's president help mediate in a conflict in neighbouring South Sudan that erupted five days ago, a spokesman for the government said.

"President (Yoweri) Museveni has been requested by the U.N. to mediate in that conflict," spokesman Ofwono Opondo said, adding that a Ugandan minister would join an east African mediation effort to South Sudan announced by the African Union.
