At least 42 people, including children, were killed on Sunday (December 22) when Syrian army helicopters dropped improvised "barrel bombs" in the northern province of Aleppo, a monitoring group said.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said separate air raids hit several districts in Aleppo.

Amateur video uploaded to a social media website on Monday (December 23) was said to show the aftermath of one air strike, on a school in the town of Mareh in Aleppo province.

In the video, attributed to the Shahba Press Agency, children are reportedly running away from the school in a panic.

A wall of the school building is destroyed and men are working inside to remove rubble and help children out of the building.

The Lebanese newspaper 'The Daily Star' reported on its website that the school was used by Syrians fleeing the fighting in other areas. It said three members of the same family were killed in the incident.

Reuters is unable to verify the content of the video.
