White House: haven't seen Russia pull back from Ukraine border

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE, May 7 (Reuters) - Responding to Russia's announcement it is pulling troops back from the Ukraine border, the White House said on Wednesday it has seen no evidence Moscow is doing so and believes a secession referendum should be canceled, not merely postponed.

"We would certainly welcome a meaningful and transparent withdrawal" of Russian military forces from the border region, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters traveling with President Barack Obama to Arkansas and California.

"To date, there has been no evidence that such a withdrawal has taken place," he said. (Reporting By Steve Holland, writing by Mark Felsenthal and Roberta Rampton; Editing by Chizu Nomiyama)
