Papua New Guinea: Disaster Risk Reduction project protects villages, saves lives

Papua New Guinea is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the Pacific region. Earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis are just a few of the natural threats. Many isolated villages on the heavily forested mountains also face the threat of floods and landslides which can destroy crops, homes and access to roads. To better prepare these communities, the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) has committed €1.3 million to support four organisations in implementing community-based Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) projects.

Watch this video produced by ECHO’s Regional Information Officer who recently visited a project by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in central Papua New Guinea.
