VIDEO: Refugee women turn love of cooking into booming business

by Amelia Wong/Shanshan Chen | Thomson Reuters Foundation

The Chickpea Sisters are a group of refugee and migrant women running their own catering enterprise in South London. The've come from countries as diverse as Libya, Iraq, Eritrea and Somalia but share a passion for cooking.

They first met over coffee at a local community centre where they began sharing recipes and soon realized they could use their culinary skills to gain a foothold in the UK employment market. The Chickpea Sisters now cater for festivals, events and dinner parties and dream of opening their own restaurant.

They also aspire to help other refugee women. Next year they'll mentor a new group of women to help them gain the confidence, language and business skills to find employment and independence.
