Sierra Leone struggles to fight Ebola

by Reuters

Ibrahim Kamara suspects he has Ebola -- he's waiting for help to arrive in a neighbourhood called Devil Hole, near the Sierra Leone capital.

His eyes are glassy and red, a common symptom of the deadly virus that's killed nearly 7,000 people.

Adama, his wife, said a neighbour died on Saturday from symptoms similar to Ebola.

Those living nearby are scared they'll catch it too.

LOCAL RESIDENT, 38-YEAR-OLD KADIJAH BAH, SAYING:

"I won't lie to you - I'm really worried with that man lying over there. That's why I put on this sweater because it's a transferable disease, right? Maybe the wind will transfer it to me and my family."

Sierra Leone is the worst hit country -- more than 300 new cases were confirmed in the past week.

Officers overseeing suspected Ebola patients say that help is slow to arrive.

SURVEILLANCE OFFICER, TOMEH BANGURA, SAYING:

"We called more than three times, saying we need an ambulance but until now I've not seen an ambulance. It's a problem, very serious problem."

The government has launched a major operation, sending health workers out to look for patients to help contain the epidemic.
