An Eritrean in Ethiopia: Teddy Love’s story

Lounge singer Teddy Loves's journey from Eritrea 7 years ago brought him through Sudan and eventually to Addis Ababa where he reunited with his children, Fikr and Nahom.

But supporting his family as a refugee and without a work permit in Ethiopia, life is a constant struggle. To buoy his children's spirits, they record music videos together and put them on the internet.

"In this very disgusting house, I make them happy because their minds are free," he says.

An estimated 400,000 Eritreans have fled their country over the last six years due to human rights abuses, political persecution and indefinite military conscription.

Many, like Teddy, end up in Ethiopia, but a lack of opportunity even for informal labour means they continue their journey, often doing so via dangerous routes.
