Sima Samar

Chairperson of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC)


A renowned advocate of human and women's rights, Dr Samar was appointed as the first chair of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission in June 2002. Prior to that, she was elected vice chair of Afghanistan's Emergency Loya Jirga and also served as the deputy chair and Minister of Women's Affairs in the post-Taliban Interim Administration of Afghanistan. She served as United Nation's Special Rapporteur on human rights in Sudan between 2005 and 2009.
