    As field monitor for WFP Ethiopia's Gambella office, Pereleth Othieing is putting in marathon hours in the refugee camps and border points of western Ethiopia. His task: making sure the hundreds of South Sudanese refugees pouring into the country daily receive the food and nutritional assistance they desperately need. So far, nearly 150,000 South Sudanese have sought asylum in western Ethiopia, since conflict erupted in their homeland in December, 2013.

    The humanitarian crisis in South Sudan is becoming a regional tragedy. Tens of thousands have fled South Sudan, many to Ethiopia which hosts the largest number of South Sudanese refugees. Elisabeth Nyapal from Upper Nile State describes how she fled because of the conflict and that there is no food or water back home. WFP is providing food assistance with High Energy Biscuits, paying particular attention to children, pregnant women and the malnourished. What happens next is a question not just for these South Sudan refugees, but also for the newest generation of the world's newest country.
