    EL SALVADOR: Salesian University Continues Training in Orthopedics in Support of Efforts in Haiti

    The Salesian-run Don Bosco University in El Salvador plans to train 32 new professionals in various forms of prosthetic and orthotics, artificial limbs and other medical support and will place them in rehabilitation centers in Haiti. As ongoing support for those injured in the Haiti earthquake on Jan. 12, 2010, this training program was implemented in April 2011 and will continue through December 2014.

    The work of Reverend Deacon Leroy S. Close at 1000jobsHaiti was featured in a July 11, 2012, Huffington Post article by Marc Ozburn, founder and CEO of TheDoGooder.com. Ozburn reports that at age 16, Buck (Close's nickname that he continues to go by today) was introduced to the Salesian Sisters of Haiti by his mother. Close's family, the article says, had helped the nuns build schools and orphanages in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince to serve needy children. Ozburn notes that the experience was life-changing for Buck and sparked his desire to help the struggling country.

    CONGO: Food Aid Relief Needed for Salesian School in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

    According to the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR, the eastern most part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has seen continued military operations against armed groups which has led to internal displacement and food shortages. A Salesian-run school, Don Bosco Ngangi Center located in Goma, in the eastern section of the country, is feeling the effects and has begun raising funds to provide continued food aid to the children they serve. A recent cut-back in food aid from an organization that serves the Salesian-run school makes the situation even more critical.

    ECUADOR: Salesian Missions Office for International Programs, State Department Visit "New Beginnings"

    Edson Timana, program officer with the Salesian Missions Office for International Programs, recently returned from a visit to Ecuador to oversee a site visit from officials from Population, Refugee, and Migration, a department within the U.S. Department of State. Timana visited several Salesian-run sites in anticipation of the Department of State official visit, and had the opportunity to tour Domingo Savio Salesian School in Guayaquil, Ecuador and Kennedy Salesian School located in Quito, Ecuador. In Panama City, Panama, Timana visited Tecnico Don Bosco.

    WORLD REFUGEE DAY: Salesians Give Refugees "New Beginnings"

    The international community celebrated World Refugee Day on June 20 - which is recognized annually as the day to focus on the plight of millions of families around the globe that have lost their homes to violence and war and to advocate on their behalf. World Refugee Day 2012 was coordinated by the UN Refugee Agency, UNHRC.

    WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILDHOOD LABOR: Salesians Provide Education Key to Tackling Child Labor

    Ten years ago, the International Labor Organization (ILO) established June 12 as World Day Against Child Labor. The ILO, an agency of the United Nations, says on its website: "Hundreds of millions of girls and boys throughout the world are engaged in work that deprives them of adequate education, health, leisure and basic freedoms, violating their rights." The World Day Against Child Labor was launched as a way to highlight the plight of these children and support governments and social organizations in their campaigns against child labor.

    KENYA: Salesian Missions Office for International Programs Visits Kenya to Assist with Funding for Girls'

    Salesian Missions staff members recently returned from a visit Kenya, where they toured Salesian-run youth education programs and assisted with the request for financial support for the Girls' Education Challenge Project?a program funded by the Department for International Development in the United Kingdom. The visiting staff members, Denis Akankunda, international development associate of public health, and John Rio, grants accountant, are with the Salesian Missions Office for International Programs located at the nonprofit organization's New Rochelle headquarters.

    LIBERIA: Salesian Programs Educate Youth and Instill Responsibility

    Salesian Missions has been working in Liberia since 1979 when they opened their first vocational technical institute there. Nearly two-thirds of Liberia's 3.5 million residents fall below the poverty line and families are struggling to rebuild in the wake of a devastating civil war. Since their arrival more than 30 years ago, the Salesians have developed programs with a focus on providing youth with skills to transform their lives and their country.

    PAPUA NEW GUINEA: Research Indicates Salesian Education Deters Youth Crime

    Shaun Larcom?who holds a research doctorate from the University College of London?studied the relationship between criminal behavior and juridical pluralism in Papua New Guinea with the assistance of staff at the Salesian-run Vunabosco Agro-Technical Secondary School. As Larcom studied youth at the Salesian-run school, he found that access to education played a much greater role in reducing the propensity for payback killings than harsh criminal penalties. He also noted the positive impact the Salesians had on education and on their local community.

    GLOBAL: Stop Hunger Now Partners with Salesian Missions to Feed World's Poorest Youth

    Stop Hunger Now?an international relief organization that provides food and life?saving aid to the world's most vulnerable?has developed an ongoing partnership with Salesian Missions. This year, Stop Hunger Now is slated to send eleven 40-foot containers of food to Salesian sites around the globe, up from the six shipped in 2011.
